Hospital For Sick Children

In this hospital, the feeling was not so clinical. In
the room assigned to us, a seat cushion bed was
provided for one parent, but still not a real bed.
The room was nice with pastel colors throughout,
a nice chair and bench seating built into the wall
(which doubles as a bed). This room was much
more kid friendly.

Sick kids was much better, however, I think it could
be improved as follows: Add some kids furniture like
book shelves with books, a small desk/table or portable
bed desk for writing or coloring. I would suggest theme
rooms that may be split along gender lines. An example
could be the “Harry Potter” room. Add soft lighting with kid
décor lamps.

Another suggestion would be to camouflage the required medical equipment into the room décor. For example, recess monitors into cupboards or disguise them as cartoon characters, ect. The idea here is to disguise the room from a medical unit into a bedroom/playroom combination for the child.

The focus should be stimulation of the young mind from birth.

We have stayed in at least three different hospitals with our daughter in the past years. At five years
old now, thankfully, a lot of these experiences are behind us. Still the memories of the experiences will remain with us for years to come. For this reason, many areas within the health care system could
be re-visited and adjusted to more “user-friendly” environments.
